For the many Afghan victims and rights activists, the situation looks hopeless. From all sides and all corners they are in limbo. American troops are out but their government hasn’t shown any intention to investigate their own servicemen for alleged war crimes. The current Afghanistan government has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) for a deferral. But based on the kind of cases Kabul has brought forward and the lack of real investigations “it’s a total deception,” says one of the Afghan activists interviewed by our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts in this disheartening and necessary podcast. Nothing comes from the ICC either. Facing a spike of threats, targeted killings, and bleak prospects they seem to have nowhere to look for support. “What I really hoped for my daughters, I don’t think we will be able to do that,” says another women’s activist. After many hard-won hopes and promises, Afghan victims are left to themselves and to their long-time tormentors.
