For several years, the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the government of Venezuela have sort of played a cat and mouse game<\/a>. And meanwhile, almost ten years after Nicolas Maduro became president, serious human rights violations are continuing. There is systematic use of arbitrary detention, and torture, among other violations. In fact crimes against Indigenous communities are increasing, says Joanna Frivet, a member of an expert panel set up by the Organization of American states. So where are we in the relationship between the ICC and Venezuela ? In this podcast by our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts, Frivet and Marta Valinas, a member of the UN fact-finding commission on Venezuela, explain how they are documenting crimes against humanity in the country and analyze how the ICC is moving forward after years of \u201cexamination\u201d<\/a>, followed by nearly two years of on-and-off investigation, and two memoranda of understanding signed by the ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, including one this summer that has been kept confidential. \u201cHow can you reasonably expect the other party [the victims] to have faith in the process?\u201d worries Frivet. \u201cWe\u2019re in a situation where the [ICC] appeals chamber say that Venezuela is not meeting the standard and we have deals happening that we don\u2019t know about\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
