The civil war has devastated the country, with fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). An estimated 10,000 people were killed and more than six million displaced. The war has also been marked by widespread sexual violence, with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2024\/10\/sudan-un-fact-finding-mission-documents-large-scale-sexual-violence-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> United Nations saying<\/a> the RSF are \u201cresponsible for committing sexual violence on a large scale in areas under their control, including gang-rapes and abducting and detaining victims in conditions that amount to sexual slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this podcast our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts have invited Sudanese activist <a href=\"https:\/\/sihanet.org\/leadership\/\">Hala Al-Karib<\/a> to highlight the targeted violence against women in Sudan.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s beyond dire situations,\u201d says the regional director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sihanet.org\/\">Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA)<\/a>. \u201cThe gender aspect is very central in this conflict. Women bodies are used as war tools. It became almost normalized.
