Photo: \u00a9 Julien De Rosa \/ AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran has been central in the news \u2013 again.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-rounds-up-thousands-mass-arrest-campaign-after-crushing-unrest-sources-say-2026-01-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Anti government protests<\/a>\u00a0erupted across the country in December, initially focused on the dire economy then rapidly calling for the end of the regime. They were the biggest demonstrations since 2022. In the 71 towns and cities affected the repression was unprecedented. An Iranian official said authorities have verified at least 5,000 deaths and that is considered a very low estimate. Less than four years ago other mass protests known as \u00ab\u00a0Women Life Freedom\u00a0\u00bb and demanding fundamental rights, symbolizing a broader resistance against compulsory dress codes, gender discrimination, and government oppression, had lead to many arrests and violence already.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts invited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gissounia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Gissou Nia,\u00a0<\/a>a human rights lawyer and founder &amp; director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/expert\/gissou-nia\/\">Strategic Litigation Project at the Atlantic Council<\/a>\u00a0to talk current, past and prospects for accountability on Iran\u2019s protests.
