Arusha, 1 June 2007 (FH) - Mr. Roland Amoussouga who had been relieved of his duties as spokesperson for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in September 2005 was restored to his functions, it was learned on Friday from official source in Arusha.
\nMr. Amoussouga, a Togolese lawyer, had been accused of having supported the appointment of a French lawyer to the office of lawyers of the ICTR and had been relieved of his duties as well as his responsibilities for the external relations' service of the ICTR as the appointment of the lawyer had been suspended. <\/p>\n
A panel appointed by the Registrar of the ICTR had ratified this decision without an investigation. Following an action for libel filed by the French lawyer in Paris against the author of a book reporting this episode, an investigation of the French police force had made it possible to conclude that it had no merit. The author of the book was convicted in the beginning 2007. <\/p>\n
Roland Amoussouga had then asked the United Nations to restore him to his functions. The request, transmitted to New York, has still not received an answer. But the Registrar has just decided to reappoint Mr. Amoussouga to his post of spokesperson. This function had since been occupied on a purely temporary basis. <\/p>\n
