Arusha, 12 September 2007 (FH) - A training session intended for Rwandan lawyers to prepare them for trials of accused from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) will be organized during the third week of September in Kigali, the tribunal announced.
\nThis training session, which will be repeated, comes after a preceding session organized in August for the Rwandan Judges of the Supreme Court who will have to try defendants of the ICTR. In addition to the speakers of the ICTR, different lecturers will come from other organizations such as the International Criminal Court or the Organization for Transitional Justice. <\/p>\n
The ICTR, which must finish its first instance trials by the end of 2008, plans to transfer prisoners that it will not have time to try to national courts. The majority of the transfers of defendants, or cases, should be made to Rwanda, whose legal system is still rebuilding 13 years after having almost disappeared at the time of the genocide. <\/p>\n
Within the framework of the last United Nations resolutions concerning the ICTR, this organization must help with the rebuilding of the Rwandan legal system. A program to this end will be established by the end of the year. <\/p>\n
