Kigali, 7 December 2007 (FH) - Seven judges of the Rwandan gacaca court of the Kibirizi sector, in the South Province were arrested on 28 November for dissimulation of evidence, reports Friday the League for Human Rights in the Great Lakes Region (LDGL).
\nThe only one that is still detained is Innocent Maniraho, vice-president of the court and a student at the National University of Rwanda (NUR), all the others were releases the following day, reports on its website the LDGL, a regional collective whose headquarters are in Kigali. <\/p>\n
The local police explained that there were "file leaks in the appellate courts of the Kibirizi sector", continues the organization which stresses that "Maniraho was transferred to the police station in Muganza where he should appear" before a judge. <\/p>\n
The defendant, who is also a volunteer human rights activist in his area, indicated to the LDGL, which visited him in his detention center, that he is prosecuted for corruption in complicity with the president of this court. <\/p>\n
The semi-traditional gacaca courts are charged with trying the majority of the alleged authors of the 1994 genocide which resulted, according to Kigali, in nearly a million killed, primarily Tutsis. <\/p>\n
The gacaca judges are not jurists but persons chosen within the community on the basis of the only criterion of integrity. Ibuka, the principal organization of genocide survivors, has not stopped denouncing cases of corruption in certain gacaca courts. <\/p>\n
