Paris, 28 February 2008 (FH) - Claver Kamana, a Rwandan was arrested Tuesday in Annecy, Haute-Savoie, following an international arrest warrant issued by Kigali over 1994 genocide.
\nThe Rwandan authorities accused Mr Kamana, a businessman, of genocide and complicity in genocide.<\/p>\n
Kamana has been living in Annecy for a year and has resided in France for several years, according to a French source.<\/p>\n
The registry has recorded Mr Kamana's age as 68 years, but, according to his statements, he is 74 years old.<\/p>\n
He was transferred Wednesday morning to the prosecutor of Chambery, who has seven days to notify him of the arrest warrant details.<\/p>\n
Another Rwandan was arrested at the request of Kigali last month.<\/p>\n
Marcel Bivugabagabo, a former Lieutenant-Colonel of the Rwandan army, was arrested on 7 January in Toulouse.<\/p>\n
The investigation chamber of the Court of Appeal of Toulouse has asked the Rwandan legal authorities for additional details before considering the extradition request.<\/p>\n
Bivugabagabo, 53, who was living in Toulouse for several years under a legal status and was employed. His name appears on the list of the 93 people wanted by Rwanda.<\/p>\n
The arrests have accelerated since Rwanda and France restarted dialogues for a re-establishment of diplomatic relations.<\/p>\n
The French-Rwandan ties worsened after French investigating Judge Jean Louis Bruguiere accused the current head of state, Paul Kagame, being a link to the attack against the plane of President Juvenal Habyarimana on April 6, 1994 which sparked the killings.<\/p>\n
Nine close aides of the Rwandan president have since been the object of international arrest warrants.<\/p>\n
