\nArusha, 4 April 2008 (FH) - About 150 Rwandan prosecutors are attending a ten-day capacity building seminar on the law of indictments in Nyanza, Southern Province, according to a press statement issued by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) Friday.\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nThe participants are drawn from different levels of prosecution for the workshop, which started on 1 April.\n<\/p>\n
\nIn his opening remarks, Mr Richard Karegyesa, a Senior Trial Attorney, on behalf of the ICTR Prosecutor, Mr. Hassan Bubacar Jallow, said that the training was one of important pillars of the justice system.\n<\/p>\n
\nHe added that the seminar would enable exchange of legal experience in drafting indictments and also sharing of judicial issues between the UN Court and Rwandan prosecutors.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe ICTR official also thanked the European Union (EU) and the World Bank (WB) for the support the two institutions are providing in strengthening the capacity of the Rwandan judiciary.\n<\/p>\n
\nMr Karegyesa announced that the Tribunal will continue with its capacity building programme for the Rwandan justice sector. He commended the existing excellent relationship between the ICTR and Rwanda.\n<\/p>\n
\nOn behalf of the Prosecutor General Martin Ngoga, the Deputy Prosecutor General, Mr Hitiyaremye Alphonce, commended the organizers of the seminar, which he said would provide the necessary.\n<\/p>\n
\nKnowledge to improve the work of the prosecutors. The Rwandan Official added that the techniques in drafting indictments would enable the country's judiciary to operate on international standards needed in the protection of the rights for the accused.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe training was being facilitated by officials from the office of the Prosecutor. It follows similar ones already organized by the ICTR for judges and members of the Rwanda Bar Association, among others.\n<\/p>\n
