\nArusha, 12 March 2009 (FH) - Parties in the case of the former Acting minister of Interior, Callixe Kalimanzira accused of genocide at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) will present their closing arguments on April 17, 2009.\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to the order issued by the Trial Chamber, the defence and the prosecution are also supposed to file their written briefs by April 2.\n<\/p>\n
\nKalimanzira, an agronomist by training, was appointed Cabinet Director in the Ministry of Interior, in September 1992.\n<\/p>\n
\n
\nThe prosecutor accuses Kalimanzira of having supported the policy of the interim government under which genocide was committed and, especially allegations that he used his influence to incite the massacres of Tutsis in his native region of Butare (southern Rwanda).\n<\/p>\n
\n
\nThe trial opened on May 5, 2008 whereas the prosecution rested his case on June 30, 2008 after having called 24 witnesses. For its part, the defence concluded its case as well on February 11, this year after having heard the 43rd and last witness who is also the defendant himself.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe former Cabinet Director surrendered to the Tanzanian authorities in November 2005, coming from Nairobi, Kenya, where he lived with his family.\n<\/p>\n
