\nArusha, 30 October 2009 (FH) - The Prosecutor of International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Hassan Babucar Jallow, has said more arrests of genocide fugitives are expected before end of this year.\n<\/p>\n

\n‘'We're expecting more arrests before end of this year,'' he told Hirondelle Agency in an interview Thursday.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe ICTR's tracking team in collaboration with International Police (INTERPOL) recently arrested Gregoire Ndahimana in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Idelphonse Nizeyimana in Uganda. The former was a Mayor whereas the latter was head of intelligence and military operations at Rwanda's elite military training school, the ESO, during the genocide.\n<\/p>\n
\nBoth have already appeared in the court and have pleaded not guilty to 1994 killings.\n<\/p>\n
\nJustice Jallow has also reiterated his determination to file new transfer applications of genocide accused early next year to stand trials in Rwanda despite last year's drawback. ‘'I'll file new transfer applications of genocide accused early next year,'' Justice Jallow said.\n<\/p>\n
\nMeanwhile, record fifty-five witnesses are expected to testify in the defence of the former Secretary General of then Rwandan ruling party (MRND), Joseph Nzirorera, on trial before the ICTR.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe prosecution presented almost half the number combined in the trial, which jointly accuses three top former leaders of MRND for their roles in the 1994 genocide.\n<\/p>\n
\nRecords indicate that this is the highest number of defence witnesses ever to be presented in the Tribunal's 15-year history.\n<\/p>\n
\nEdouard Karemera, former Vice-President of MRND, has already concluded his defence case after presenting 35 witnesses including himself, on May 28, this year.\n<\/p>\n
\nIn another development, secondary school students and teachers from Rulindo and Musanze districts of Northern Rwanda this week attended an outreach workshop to learn about the contribution of ICTR to the national reconciliation process in Rwanda.\n<\/p>\n
\nAccording to an ICTR press release, the three-day workshop in Musanze was sponsored by the European Commission.\n<\/p>\n
