{"id":23180,"date":"2011-03-18T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/23180-en-en-180311-ictrgatete-ictr-to-deliver-judgment-in-the-case-of-former-rwandan-director-march-291398913989.html"},"modified":"2011-03-18T02:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-03-18T01:00:00","slug":"en-en-180311-ictrgatete-ictr-to-deliver-judgment-in-the-case-of-former-rwandan-director-march-291398913989","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/en\/23180-en-en-180311-ictrgatete-ictr-to-deliver-judgment-in-the-case-of-former-rwandan-director-march-291398913989.html","title":{"rendered":"18.03.11 - ICTR\/GATETE - ICTR TO DELIVER JUDGMENT IN THE CASE OF FORMER RWANDAN DIRECTOR MARCH 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nArusha, March 18, 2011 (FH) - The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) will deliver its judgment in the case of former Rwandan Director in the Ministry of Women and Family Affairs, Jean-Baptiste Gatete, on March 29, 2011, according to a scheduling order issued on Thursday.\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p >\n<p >\n<p >\nDuring closing arguments presented on November 8, 2010, Senior Trial Attorney Drew White requested the Tribunal to hand down life imprisonment sentence to the defendant if convicted of offences of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide and extermination, murder and rape as crimes against humanity.\n<\/p>\n<p >\n<p >\nHowever, the defendant's lead counsel Marie-Pierre Poulain requested for acquittal of her client, saying the prosecution failed to substantiate the charges beyond reasonable doubts.\n<\/p>\n<p >\nGatete, who also served as mayor of Murambi commune in Byumba prefecture (Northeast Rwanda) between 1987 and 1993, was relieved of his duty amidst allegations of persecuting Tutsis.&nbsp; But soon after, he was appointed Director in the Women and Family Affairs Ministry then headed by Pauline Nyiramasuhuko, who is also waiting for judgement in her case at ICTR.\n<\/p>\n<p >\nHe was a member of the National Congress of former ruling party, MRND, and was active in party politics both at national and provincial level. He allegedly continued to control local police, gendarmes and militiamen in Byumba and Kibungo prefectures after his dismissal and used his influence to organize massacres of Tutsis in both prefectures.\n<\/p>\n<p >\n<p >\nGatete was arrested in Congo-Brazzaville on September 11, 2002, and subsequently transferred to the UN Detention Facility in Arusha.&nbsp; His trial started on October 20, 2009.\n<\/p>\n<p >\n<p >\nThis is the first judgement of the year during which judgements at the first instance level are expected in cases involving 20 other accused, among them former ministers and generals of the Rwandan army.\n<\/p>\n<p >\n<p >\nFK\/GF\n<\/p>\n<p >\n&copy; Hirondelle News Agency<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arusha, March 18, 2011 (FH) -
