\nThe Hague, July 9, 2011 (FH) - An appeal court in The Hague sentenced on July 7 to life in jail Rwandan Joseph Mpambara after he was found guilty of crimes of war committed during the 1994 genocide.\n<\/p>\n

\nJoseph Mpambara was a member of the Interahamwe in Mugonero. On March 23, 2009, he was sentenced in first instance to a 20-year term. The prosecution and the defence had appealed the judgment.\n<\/p>\n
\nAccording to the presiding judge of the appeal court Raoul Dekkers, "Hundreds of people were killed or wounded" in a church that was attacked following Mpambara's orders. "He incited other people to commit the crimes", the judge said, adding that these crimes were committed within a "genocidaire plan".\n<\/p>\n
\nAppeal judges also found Mpambara guilty of killing two mothers and their four children on April 13, 1994.\n<\/p>\n
\nJoseph Mpambara had sought refuge in the Netherlands in 1998, where he was finally arrested in 2006. His brother Obed Ruzindana was sentenced in 2001 by the ICTR to 25 years in jail for crimes against humanity committed as part of a " genocidal plan".\n<\/p>\n
