\nThe Hague, December 19, 2011 (FH) - On December 12-16, after 15 rounds, the Assembly of State Parties elected six new judges out of 18 candidates, representing a third of the Court's full slate of 18 judges.\n<\/p>\n

\nThey are, Miriam Defensor-Santiago (the Philippines), Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona (Trinidad and Tobago), Robert Fremr (Czech Republic), Olga Venecia Herrera Carbuccia (Dominican Republic), Howard Morrison (United Kingdom) and Chile Eboe-Osuji (Nigeria).\n<\/p>\n
\nThe new judges will take office on March 11, 2012 to serve a nine-year mandate.\n<\/p>\n
\nMiriam Defensor-Santiago, 66, is currently a Senator, having been elected in 2010 for a third term.\n<\/p>\n
\nOlga Herrera, 55, is Judge President of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeals of the Dominican Republic (DR). She has practical experience in the field of criminal law, human rights protection, children's rights, and combating money laundering and financing terrorism.\n<\/p>\n
\nAnthony Carmona, 58, is a judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago. He has served as Appeals Counsel (Office of the Prosecutor) at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).\n<\/p>\n
\nRobert Fremr, 54, is currently judge ad litem at the ICTR, where he was in charge of Nshamihigo and Bikindi's cases. He also has nearly 25 years of experience in criminal law and procedure as a judge in his home country.\n<\/p>\n
\nChile Eboe-Osuji, 49, has worked in senior legal advisory capacities to the U.N. High Commissioner of Human Rights and has rendered legal advisory services to the Government of Nigeria and foreign governments, on questions of international law. Before that, he has litigated cases before the ICTR as senior prosecution trial counsel, the Special Court for Sierra Leone as senior prosecution appeals counsel and the European Court of Human Rights. Prior to these engagements, he was prosecution counsel in several cases at the ICTR.\n<\/p>\n
\nHoward Morrison, 62, is currently a judge at the ICTY, trying Radovan Karadzic. From 1998 to 2004, he served as a Defence counsel before ICTY and ICTR courts.\n<\/p>\n
