\nArusha, January 27, 2012 (FH) - Judges from the International Criminal Court (ICC) conducted a site visit in Ituri, the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) between January 16 and 20, to assess testimonies in the case of two Congolese rebel leaders, Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo.\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to ICC statement issued on Friday, the Chamber travelled to Bogoro, Aveba, Zumbe and Kambusto locations, visiting scenes of the alleged crimes and home villages of the two accused and witnesses. \n<\/p>\n
\nThe Chamber decided that it was necessary to visit such locations, together with the Prosecutor, the Defence and Legal Representatives of the victims, in order to make its own findings and verify various witnesses' accounts. \n<\/p>\n
\nKatanga and Ngudjolo are accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes, notably for their alleged role in the attack of Bogoro on February 24, 2003 where over 200 people were killed.\n<\/p>\n
\nTheir trial opened on November 24, 2009. Katanga was arrested and transferred to The Hague on October 17, 2007, while Ngudjolo, was apprehended on February 6, 2008 and taken to the ICC custody a day later.\n<\/p>\n
