\nDanish and Cameroon judges elected ICTR top leaders: Judges on Monday elected Danish Judge Vagn Joensen as new President of the Tribunal. He will take over from current President Khalida Rachid Khan of Pakistan on March 2. Judge Khan is to be redeployed to the Appeals Chamber in The Hague next month. At the same time, Judge Florence Rita Arrey of Cameroon was elected new Vice-President, taking over from Judge Joensen, who has been holding the post since August 2011.\n<\/p>\n

\nRwanda creates special chamber for international crimes: Rwanda's Superior Council of the Judiciary on Wednesday set up a Special Chamber at the High Court to try international crimes. The Chamber is expected to try persons accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity transferred from foreign countries and from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). The new Chamber will have six judges. Among persons expected to appear before the Chamber are Léon Mugesera, who was deported from Canada on January 24, this year, and Pastor Jean Uwinkindi, the first person that the ICTR has decided to transfer him to Rwanda for trial.\n<\/p>\n

\nBemba's trial continues: The 39th prosecution witness in the trial of Jean-Pierre Bemba completed his testimony on Monday and the case was later adjourned. It is set to resume on Wednesday (February 22) for testimony of last prosecution witness. The Congolese senator and leader of Movement for Liberation of Congo, is charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Central African Republic in 2002 and 2003.\n<\/p>\n
