Arusha, June 8, 2012 (FH) \u2013 The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), this week briefed the Security Council on the situation of Sudan and called on the UN body to adopt measures to ensure the arrest of President Omar Al-Bashir and other Sudanese leaders, while the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) referred to Rwanda the case of Bernard Munyagishari.<\/p>\n

Ocampo pushes for arrest of Al-Bashir: On Tuesday, prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo called on the Security Council to adopt measures to ensure the arrest of Sudanese leaders, including President Omar Al-Bashir. He stressed that governments refusals to implement the ICC\u00a0arrest warrant\u00a0constituted a direct challenge to the Council\u2019s authority. Malawi announced last week its intention to arrest Al-Bashir, wanted for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, if he were to set foot in the country next month for the African Union Summit.<\/p>\n
Gbagbo's lawyers\u00a0seek postponement of case hearing: The defence of former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo, Thursday requested the judges to postpone the confirmation of charges hearings scheduled for June 18.The lawyers argue that their client\u2019s health has so far prevented him from bringing a significant contribution to the preparation of the hearings. The ex-president is charged with crimes against humanity allegedly committed between December 2010 and April 2012.<\/p>\n

Munyagishari case referred to Rwanda: On Wednesday, judges ordered the transfer of the case of genocide-accused, Bernard Munyagishari to Rwanda for trial. They noted that Rwanda has made material changes in recent years on its laws and has indicated its capacity and willingness to prosecute cases referred by the Tribunal. Munyagishari is charged with conspiracy to commit genocide, genocide or, in the alternative, complicity in genocide, murder and rape as crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n
Trial of Ngirabatware resumes: The prosecution called its last witness, a Nigerian Diplomat, to testify in rebuttal of the defendant\u2019s defence of alibi that as of April 23 and May 23, 1994, he was not in Rwanda.\u00a0 The Tribunal postponed the defence's cross-examination of the witness to July 2.<\/p>\n

Mugesera shows up in court without lawyer: On Monday, Rwandan Scholar Leon Mugesera appeared before a court without his lawyer. He is challenging the refusal of his request for a further delay of his trial. Due to Mugesera's lack of legal representation, the court adjourned the case to until June 11<\/p>\n

On Monday and Tuesday, there will be status conference to set commencement date of trials involving four Kenyans allegedly linked to crimes committed during violence after December 2007 presidential election.

Genocide-accused, Leon Mugesera, who was extradited from Canada in January 2012 to Rwanda to face genocide charges, is expected to go back to court on Monday.<\/p>\n
