The Hague, August 23, 2012 (FH) - The Registrar of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has proposed a total budget of 118.75 million Euros for next year, up 9% on 2012. The budget has to be approved in November by the Assembly of States Parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Court anticipates that in 2013 it will be dealing with seven cases in seven situations at different stages of proceedings, where suspects are either in custody or have voluntarily appeared before the Court. In addition to its investigations and judicial proceedings in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Darfur (Sudan), Kenya, Libya, and more recently C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, the Office of the Prosecutor continues to monitor other situations in preliminary examination, including in Afghanistan, Colombia, Georgia, Guinea, Honduras, the Republic of Korea, Nigeria and Mali\u201d, the document reads.<\/p>\n
This proposed budget reflects an increase of 9% over 2012, despite member states\u2019 desire to reduce ICC costs. \u201cIt needs to be borne in mind that excessive reductions in resources can themselves create inefficiencies and impair performance\u201d, the Registrar argues.<\/p>\n
56% of the resources should go to the Registrar, 25% to the Prosecution office and 10% to the trial chambers, according to the proposal.<\/p>\n
If the budget is approved, the ICC will have a permanent staff of 766 employees.<\/p>\n
Since its creation in 2002, the ICC has cost\u00a0880 million Euros, while it has not yet pronounced a final sentence.<\/p>\n
