Arusha, December 19, 2012 (FH)\u2013The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Christopher Bongani Majola as new Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0a UN statement issued on Wednesday, the appointment of Majola, a South African, is effective from January 1, 2013, for a term of four years or until the closure of the ICTR, whichever is sooner. <\/p>\n
He replaces Senegalese Adama Dieng, who was appointed by the Secretary General as his Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide on July 17, 2012. <\/p>\n
Majola becomes the fourth registrar of the Tribunal since it was established 18 years ago to prosecute key perpetrators of the 1994 genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda.<\/p>\n
Other top officials from South Africa who worked at ICTR include the first Prosecutor, Richard Goldstone and the second President, Navanethem Pillay, currently United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.<\/p>\n
Prior to the new appointment, Majola was Deputy Prosecutor of the Tribunal since 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Zululand in South Africa and Masters Degree in the same field from Harvard University in the United States of America.<\/p>\n
He had previously worked as the Executive Director of the Legal Research Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Limpopo.<\/p>\n
