{"id":24793,"date":"2013-10-13T16:25:53","date_gmt":"2013-10-13T14:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/24793-131013-iccafrica-african-union-calls-for-kenyatta-trial-deferral.html"},"modified":"2013-10-13T16:25:53","modified_gmt":"2013-10-13T14:25:53","slug":"131013-iccafrica-african-union-calls-for-kenyatta-trial-deferral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/en\/24793-131013-iccafrica-african-union-calls-for-kenyatta-trial-deferral.html","title":{"rendered":"13.10.13 \u2013 ICC\/AFRICA \u2013 AFRICAN UNION CALLS FOR KENYATTA TRIAL DEFERRAL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arusha, October 13, 2013 (FH) \u2013 An extraordinary summit of the African Union (AU) decided Saturday in Ethiopia to ask the UN Security Council for a deferral of International Criminal Court proceedings against the presidents of Kenya and Sudan.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The ICC\u2019s founding Statute, the Treaty of Rome, allows for deferral at the request of the UN Security Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is due to go on trial before the ICC on November 12, \u201cshould be allowed to govern his country\u201d, said Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus. He said the summit had decided that Kenyatta should not appear until the AU\u2019s request has been answered.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyatta is charged with crimes against humanity allegedly committed during post election violence in 2007-2008.
