Arusha, October 29, 2013 (FH) \u2013 In an appeals decision Tuesday, the\u00a0 International Criminal Court ordered that former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo be maintained in detention. He is suspected of crimes against humanity linked to December 2010 elections, and has been in the ICC jail in The Hague since the end of 2011.<\/p>\n

The appeals judges deemed that if the suspect were granted provisional release, he might flee justice.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of June this year, the lower court referred the Gbagbo case back to the Prosecutor, saying it needed more evidence before it could decide whether or not to refer Gabgbo for trial. This followed confirmation of charges hearings three months earlier.\u00a0 The Court said the evidence presented was not lacking in \u201crelevance and probative value\u201d but was too reliant on NGO reports and press articles, and needed a fuller investigation by the Prosecutor.<\/p>\n
According to the Prosecutor\u2019s office, some 3,000 people died in election related violence between December 2010 and April 2011 perpetrated by both supporters of Gabgbo and of current Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara<\/p>\n
