Arusha, April 1, 2014 (FH) - The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Monday adjourned the start of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta\u2019s crimes against humanity trial to October 7, 2014, according to the Court.<\/p>\n

It says the adjournment is to give the Kenyan government more time to produce certain records requested by the prosecution.<\/p>\n
In so deciding, the Court has rejected a defence request that it dismiss the case, but also a prosecution request that the trial be suspended indefinitely, until Nairobi produce the requested documents.<\/p>\n
The ICC has given the prosecution two weeks to submit to the Kenyan authorities a revised request to produce financial and other records relating to Kenyatta. It also directed the two to \u201cengage in cooperation and consultations without delay\u201d in relation to the request, and set July 9 for a status conference.<\/p>\n
Kenyatta, who was elected president last year, is charged with five counts of crimes against humanity for his alleged role in port-election violence in Kenya in 2007-2008.<\/p>\n
The charges were confirmed on January 23, 2012. Kenyatta has always protested his innocence.<\/p>\n
According to ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, several potential prosecution witnesses are no longer willing to testify.<\/p>\n
