Arusha, August 19, 2014 (FH) \u2013 The French judicial inquiry into Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, a Rwandan priest suspected of genocide, is \u201cin its final phase\u201d, according to a report of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) consulted by Hirondelle on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Munyeshyaka\u2019s case was transferred to France in 2007 by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).<\/p>\n
The MICT report quotes Nicolas Peron, deputy prosecutor of the Paris Tribunal de Grande Instance, as saying the investigations \u201cshould be finished by the end of the year\u201d. It also says French investigators and an investigating magistrate went to Rwanda in June to hear more witnesses in the case.<\/p>\n
In November 2007, the ICTR transferred to France the cases of Munyeshyaka, former parish priest at Sainte Famille church in Kigali, and of former Gikongoro prefect Laurent Bucyibaruta, who had already been under French investigation for several years. The two men both are living in France. They are free but subject to judicial control. Munyeshyaka, who is still a priest in the northern French parish of Gisors, has already been tried in absentia in Rwanda and sentenced to life in prison.<\/p>\n
France and Rwanda are the only countries to which the ICTR has transferred certain cases as part of its closure strategy. The Tribunal is due to close its doors by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
