Arusha, September 12, 2014 (FH) \u2013 The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against Sudanese rebel Abdallah Banda who is charged with war crimes.<\/p>\n

The court also postponed indefinitely the start of Banda\u2019s trial, which had been set for November 18.\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to an ICC communiqu\u00e9, the court asked the Registry to \u201ctransmit the new requests for arrest and surrender to any State, including the Sudan, on whose territory Mr Banda may be found\u201d. <\/p>\n
Banda appeared voluntarily before the ICC on June 17, 2010. The court said it had requested\u00a0 Sudan\u2019s cooperation to \u201cfacilitate the accused\u2019s presence at trial\u201d, but that this was not forthcoming and so \u201cthere are no guarantees that, in the current circumstances, he will be in an objective position to appear voluntarily, regardless of whether he wishes to be present at trial or not\u201d.<\/p>\n
If, however, Banda does appear voluntarily, the Court said it would \u201ctake the voluntary appearance into consideration and revisit accordingly the conditions of his stay in The Netherlands during the trial\u201d.<\/p>\n
Banda faces three charges of war crimes in connection with a September 2007 attack on the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Sudan, at the Haskanita Military base in Darfur.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Other Sudanese, including President Omar Al Bashir are also wanted by the ICC for crimes committed in Darfur. <\/p>\n
Bashir still manages to travel within Africa without a problem, despite the ICC arrest warrant against him. <\/p>\n
