A verdict is scheduled for May 30, based on an announcement by the court at the end of the trial on February 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trial of Hiss\u00e8ne Habr\u00e9 shows that it is possible for victims, with tenacity and perseverance, to bring a dictator to court,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/about\/people\/reed-brody\" rel=\"alternate\">Reed Brody<\/a>, counsel at Human Rights Watch who has worked with the survivors since 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Habr\u00e9 faces charges of crimes against humanity, torture, and war crimes before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2013\/09\/02\/statute-extraordinary-african-chambers\" rel=\"alternate\">Extraordinary African Chambers<\/a>\u00a0in the Senegal court system. The chambers were inaugurated by Senegal and the African Union in February 2013, to prosecute the \u201cperson or persons\u201d most responsible for international crimes committed in Chad between 1982 and 1990, the period when Habr\u00e9 ruled Chad. The president of the Trial Chamber is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chambresafricaines.org\/index.php\/le-coin-des-medias\/communiqu%C3%A9-de-presse\/616-les-juges-de-la-chambre-africaine-extraordinaire-d%E2%80%99assises-gberdao-gustave-kam.html\" rel=\"alternate\">Gberdao Gustave Kam<\/a>\u00a0of Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<p>Habr\u00e9\u2019s trial, which began on July 20, 2015, was the first in the world in which the courts of one country prosecuted the former ruler of another for alleged human rights crimes. It was also the first universal jurisdiction case to proceed to trial in Africa. Universal jurisdiction is a legal basis in international law that allows national courts to prosecute the most serious crimes even when committed abroad, by a foreigner and against foreign victims.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2016\/05\/03\/qa-case-hissene-habre-extraordinary-african-chambers-senegal\" rel=\"alternate\">question-and-answer<\/a>\u00a0document includes information about the history of the case and details about the trial and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2013\/09\/02\/statute-extraordinary-african-chambers\" rel=\"alternate\">Extraordinary African Chambers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Habr\u00e9 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/chad1213summary_english.pdf\" rel=\"alternate\">accused of thousands of political killings and systematic torture<\/a>\u00a0during his rule, from 1982 to 1990, when he was deposed by the current president, Idriss D\u00e9by Itno, and fled to Senegal. After a 22-year campaign by his victims, the chambers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/fr\/news\/2013\/07\/02\/senegal-hissene-habre-inculpe\" rel=\"alternate\">indicted<\/a>\u00a0Habr\u00e9 in July 2013 and placed him in pretrial custody.
