{"id":33247,"date":"2017-05-08T09:19:45","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T07:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/33247-week-in-review-dealing-with-the-past-is-defining-the-present.html"},"modified":"2017-05-08T09:19:45","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T07:19:45","slug":"week-in-review-dealing-with-the-past-is-defining-the-present","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/en\/33247-week-in-review-dealing-with-the-past-is-defining-the-present.html","title":{"rendered":"Week in Review: \u201cDealing with the past is defining the present\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The way history is remembered was a theme emerging this week not only in Tunisia and Germany but also France, in the grip of presidential elections.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Remembrance and the past were one of the numerous subjects of debate between the two second-round French presidential candidates. \u201cThe country\u2019s 20th century history, including the Algerian War and the Second World War, brought some of the fiercest clashes between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron,\u201d <a href=\"fr\/component\/k2\/33222-macron-%E2%80%93-le-pen-l%E2%80%99affrontement-m%C3%A9moriel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a> JusticeInfo editorial advisor Pierre Hazan. \u201cDoesn\u2019t France also need a Truth Commission to better deal with its colonial past?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Hazan explains the clash thus: \u201cMacron and Le Pen have two different ways of seeing France. \u00a0Whatever the result of these elections, France is not done with dealing with its past. Dealing with the past also means defining the present, affirming its values and setting goals for the future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another country trying to build a common view of history is Tunisia after Ben Ali, this time through art, <a href=\"en\/component\/k2\/33118-tunisia-empowerment,-participation-and-reawakening-conscience-through-the-arts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains\u00a0 Sahar Ammar<\/a>, a student at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneva-academy.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights<\/a>. Culture allows communities to own their past again and participate in reconciliation and restorative justice processes, the author says.
