{"id":43508,"date":"2020-01-12T18:43:01","date_gmt":"2020-01-12T17:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/43508-gambia-demo-calls-for-president-to-stay-on.html"},"modified":"2020-01-12T18:43:01","modified_gmt":"2020-01-12T17:43:01","slug":"gambia-demo-calls-for-president-to-stay-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/en\/43508-gambia-demo-calls-for-president-to-stay-on.html","title":{"rendered":"Gambia demo calls for president to stay on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n             Thousands of Gambians marched in the capital Banjul Sunday calling on President Adama Barrow to serve a five-year mandate rather than the three years he promised the electorate in 2016.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            The march came after thousands took to the streets in December calling for him to respect the commitment he made with his coalition partners and stand down.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            Under the terms of that deal, he agreed to serve as a transitional leader, after being elected in December 2016.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            But supporters of Barrow say the constitution allows him to complete a five-year mandate.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            Barrow defeated the country's former dictator Yahya Jammeh in the second-round run-off of the election.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            When Jammeh tried stay on, pressure from the international community forced him into exile in January 2017. The former autocrat had ruled for 22 years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            Jammeh, who is living in exile in Equatorial Guinea, reportedly wants to return to The Gambia. In a leaked recording he approved a demonstration by his supporters scheduled for Thursday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            A truth and reconciliation commission set up to examine his era has heard testimony from around 190 witnesses of torture, murder, rape and witch hunts.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            While he still has his supporters, there have also been calls for him to be returned to the country for prosecution.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            Activists who want Barrow to stand down plan to demonstrate again next Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of Gambians marched in the capital Banjul Sunday calling on President Adama Barrow to serve a five-year mandate rather than the three years he promised the electorate in 2016.
