A former child soldier, a victim who became a perpetrator, Ongwen raises complex issues, both for the ICC and for the victims, that our Justice Info\u2019s correspondents and partners from Asymmetrical Haircuts discuss, in this new podcast, with Sharon Nakandha. The lawyers for prosecution and defence will be making their closing arguments to the judges. After this, all that\u2019s left is judgment and anything that goes with it like a sentence or an appeal. Ongwen is charged by the ICC with 70 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in northern Uganda. He\u2019s a rare accused: former child soldier himself, abducted aged 13 or 14, who rose through the ranks of the rebel group to become one of its top leaders. This is also the first case in the situation of Uganda to be tried before the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SherryKyama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sharon Nakandha<\/strong><\/a>, a transitional justice expert, who has been working with communities in northern Uganda to explain the trial process and hear what they are expecting as reparations.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like more background, Tom Maliti wrote a great <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijmonitor.org\/2020\/03\/icc-prosecutor-says-ongwen-was-a-pivotal-figure-in-lras-campaign-of-terror\/\">summary<\/a><\/strong> of the prosecution closing statements here.
