The 1995 Srebrenica massacre was ruled a genocide by both the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice. Yet in the Balkans, denial prospers. \u201cNow we are dealing with high-class, publicly-funded deniers,\u201d says<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hikmet_karcic\"> Hikmet Karcic<\/a>, a genocide studies scholar. University of Utrecht historian <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VukusicIva\">Iva Vukusic<\/a> and NYU professor at the Center for Global Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.nyu.edu\/sps-nyuglobalcitizen\/full-time-faculty\/jennifer-trahan-clinical-associate-professor\/\">Jennifer Trahan<\/a> discuss the benchmarks and claims by which an international tribunal can be assessed \u2013 or wrongly assessed. What has become of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icty.org\/x\/file\/Legal%20Library\/Statute\/statute_827_1993_en.pdf\">all those lofty pronouncements about peace and reconciliation<\/a> through criminal cases? \u201cNo one claims that nothing happened\u201d in Srebrenica, notes one of the speakers. \u201cIt\u2019s a low-level accomplishment. Hikmet, a genocide studies scholar, <a href=\"https:\/\/balkaninsight.com\/2020\/06\/30\/how-denial-of-bosnian-war-crimes-entered-the-mainstream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote for Balkan Insight<\/a> recently about how denial of Bosnian war crimes has moved from the fringes to mainstream discourse. University of Utrecht historian Iva and Jennifer, NYU professor at the Center for Global Affairs, collaborated on a <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.nl\/books?id=fTjpDwAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA462&amp;lpg=PA462&amp;dq=iva+vukusic+jennifer+trahan&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=p0hg9wXL21&amp;sig=ACfU3U1mW0y0upIYJEPaXpD9srp5UAMdFQ&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjMq52YvbbqAhXL6qQKHb43DFoQ6AEwBHoECAoQAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=iva%20vukusic%20jennifer%20trahan&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chapter<\/a> considering which benchmarks can be used to assess the legacy of the ICTY in Bosnia for a new publication: <a href=\"https:\/\/perpetratorstudies.sites.uu.nl\/2020\/06\/27\/legacies-of-the-international-criminal-tribunal-for-the-former-yugoslavia-a-multidisciplinary-approach\/\"><em>Legacies of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia: a Multidisciplinary Approach<\/em> <\/a>. You maybe also remember Iva from our 2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asymmetricalhaircuts.com\/episodes\/episode-6-dogs-of-war-with-iva-vukusic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dogs of War<\/a><\/em> episode where we discuss her research into paramilitaries.<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to know what are the lasting effects of the ICTY cases in Bosnia and what has become of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icty.org\/x\/file\/Legal%20Library\/Statute\/statute_827_1993_en.pdf\">all those lofty pronouncements about peace and reconciliation<\/a> through criminal cases. And we talked about national trials and the importance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/icr.icty.org\/\">ICTY case records<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As always we asked recommendations and our contributors did not dissapoint.
