CIJA has remained a rather secretive organization. There have been rumors about its alleged connections to intelligence services. More recently it has been indirectly mentioned in relation to a fraud case. In this Podcast realized in partnership with Justice Info, Nerma Jelacic, deputy director of CIJA addresses these allegations. She explains that her organization currently offers support to 36 law enforcement agencies from 14 countries that are investigating war crimes on which CIJA has gathered evidence, notably in Syria. “They are our end customers,” says Jelacic. “They’ve been through the methodology, they’ve been through the evidence of CIJA and it’s their recognition that is the recognition that the model works.”

To listen to the podcast, click on the "play" button below:

What do you do when there are massive atrocities taking place but no international tribunal, no national courts, not even the glimmer of a UN enquiry, yet collecting the evidence? Their very early endeavours gathering evidence in Syria, for example, are bearing fruit at trials such as the one in Koblenz, Germany of a senior state official which we featured here.

This model has been lauded in the media. But earlier in 2020 a long running EU investigation into fraud around several NGOs operating in evidence collection in Syria and Iraq brought CIJA some negative headlines.

Nerma Jelacic, director for management, talks about what CIJA is now doing.
