And the change of trend has come from outside the country. After a few trials in the U.S., mainly on immigration charges turned into virtual war crimes proceedings, two trials are underway in Finland and Switzerland and others are pending in Belgium, France and perhaps the U.K., taking advantage of universal jurisdiction. A key actor behind most of these cases is the Swiss-based NGO Civitas Maxima. Emmanuelle Marchand, head of the Legal Unit at Civitas, and Massa Emilia Washington, a former member of Liberia\u2019s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, join our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts to reflect on this shift which has, in their view, \u201crevigorated the hope for accountability in Liberia\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>To listen to the podcast, click on the \"play\" button below:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.blubrry.com\/id\/74233678\/#time-0&amp;darkOrLight-Light&amp;shownotes-ffffff&amp;shownotesBackground-ffc72c&amp;download-ffffff&amp;downloadBackground-382e2c&amp;subscribe-ffffff&amp;subscribeBackground-9b9593&amp;share-382e2c&amp;shareBackground-ffffff\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"138px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There has been in boom in the numbers of trials all over the world that tackle the horrors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/global-african-history\/first-liberian-civil-war-1989-1996\/\">first Liberian civil war<\/a>. It essentially spanned the 1990s and a quarter of a million people died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until recently we only had Liberian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijmonitor.org\/charles-taylor-background\/\">Charles Taylor<\/a> at the Special Court for Sierra Leone \u2013 and he wasn\u2019t tried for anything he did in Liberia. Right now we\u2019ve got Finland where Sierra Leonean<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/civitas-maxima.org\/trial-monitoring-gibril-massaquoi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gibril Massaquoi is now on trial <\/a>for murder, rape and using child soldiers in Liberia, while he was a commander in the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). He was not prosecuted by Special Court, because he was one of their insider witnesses on other RUF commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in Switzerland there is another case at the Federal Criminal Court in the city of Bellinzona. Alieu Kosiah, a former commander of the United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy armed group, known as ULIMO is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justiceinfo.net\/en\/74051-swiss-trial-liberian-victims-chilling-tales-alieu-kosiah.html\">on trial<\/a>.
