With its massive legal team, the oil company has done everything to stop this indictment, in what has become \u201cthe largest criminal investigation in Swedish history\u201d, says Wesslink.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>To listen to the podcast, click on the \"play\" button below:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.blubrry.com\/id\/83141114#darkOrLight-Light&shownotes-ffffff&download-ffffff&subscribe-ffffff&share-382e2c&shownotesBackground-ffc72c&downloadBackground-382e2c&subscribeBackground-9b9593&shareBackground-ffffff\" title=\"Blubrry Podcast Player\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"138px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>In November the prosecutor\u2019s office in Sweden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/sweden-charges-lundin-energy-executives-complicity-sudan-war-crimes-2021-11-11\/\">announced<\/a> it had brought charges against the chairman and former CEO of Lundin Energy&nbsp;for complicity in war crimes allegedly committed by the Sudanese army and allied militia in southern Sudan from 1999 to 2003 during the so called oil wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basis for the charges was a 2010 report authored by <a href=\"https:\/\/paxforpeace.nl\/unpaid-debt\">Dutch NGO Pax for Peace<\/a> on the behalf of the European Coalition on Oil in Sudan called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/paxforpeace.nl\/media\/download\/unpaid-debt.pdf\">Unpaid Debt<\/a><\/em>. The report sets out the story of how between 1997 and 2003 and oil consortium including Swedish oil firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lundinsudanlegalcase.com\/\">Lundin<\/a>, together with Austria\u2019s OMV and Malaysian firm Petronas, tried to secure an area in Southern Sudan known as Block 5 for oil exploration. To get control of the area they paid government forces and militias who committed war crimes, the report says.
