Arusha, March 27, 2007 (FH) – Desire Munyaneza, a Rwandan aged 40 years, has been on trial since Monday in Montreal (Canada) for his alleged participation in the Rwandan genocide in the region of Butare, in the south of the country, Agence France Presse announced. Munyaneza who is accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, has pleaded not guilty. He was arrested in October 2005 in Toronto for acts committed in 1994, specifically attacks against Butare University where he had studied some years before. This trial, which should last three months, has been made possible by the adoption in 2000 by Canada of the law of universal jurisdiction. This law, also adopted by Belgium and Spain, permits trials against foreign nationals accused of having taken part in genocide. After Munyaneza’s arrest, the Rwandan Minister for Justice, Mrs. Edda Mukabagwiza confirmed that other suspects are in Canada where they will stand trial. PB/KD © Hirondelle News Agency
