20.03.08-FRANCE/RWANDA - FRENCH COURT REJECTS RELEASE OF RWANDAN GENOCIDE ACCUSED

Paris, 20 March 2008(FH) - The Investigations Chamber of Court of Appeal of Chambery refused Wednesday request for the release of Claver Kamana, a former Rwandan businessman, placed under detention for extradition at the request of Rwanda which wants him for his alleged involvement in the 1994 genocide.  

The prosecution opposed to the request for the release.The investigation chamber must decide on 2 April on the extradition request.

Kamana's age according to the civil registry is 68 year, but his[Kamana] statement mentioned 74 year of age. He has resided in Annecy for a year, with a regular residence visa, and for several years in France.

In addition, the investigation chamber of the Court of Appeal of Toulouse referred to 29 April the examination of the extradition request of a former soldier of the Rwandan army, Marcel Bivugabagabo, arrested on 7 January in France at the request of the Rwandan government.
