08.05.08 - RWANDA/GENOCIDE - MEN SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS FOR MURDER OF FAMILY OF SEVEN

Kigali, 8 May 2008 (FH) - The semi-traditional Gacaca Court of Kigali district has sentenced to 30 years two persons implicated in the murder of a family of seven during the 1994 genocide, reports Hirondelle Agency.

The murdered family has been identified as Kayiranga in Nyakabanda Sector, near the Baobab Hotel.

The Court also found Anastase Bazirera and Samuel Ndorimana of direct involvement in the killings, in the trial which began some three months ago.

The same court also imprisoned to 19 years jail an accomplice identified as Henry Hitimana.

The gacaca courts are charged with trying the majority of the persons allegedly responsible for the genocide.The courts are not presided by lawyers but by people chosen from among the community for their integrity.

According to UN estimates, about 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in the April-July slaughter.
