03.03.09 - ICTR/SENEGAL - SENEGAL HOSTS INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON GENDER JUSTICE

Arusha, 3 March 2009 (FH) - The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) are organizing this Friday and Saturday in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, an international conference devoted to justice related to sexual violence.

Based in Accra Ghana, Africa Legal Aid is a pan-African organization in the defence of human rights.

According to the two-day program, the conference will be opened by the Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade. In attendance will also be the French Secretary of State charged with human rights, Rowed Yade, and a representative of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF).

Several important figures of international criminal justice will also be present, such as President and Prosecutor of ICTR, Justice Dennis Byron and  Justice Hassan Bubacar Jallow respectively; Serge Brammertz,  ICTY Prosecutor and Fatou Bensouda, Deputy  Prosecutor of International Criminal Court (ICC).

Justice Jallow is expected to present a paper on the experience of the ICTR in regards to the repression of rape.

The ICTR was the first to establish the jurisprudence according to which rape is now an act of genocide.

On the second and final day, it will be participation of victims of sexual violence in the legal process.
