31.03.09 - ICTR/NTAWUKURIRYAYO - TRIAL OPENING OF FORMER RWANDAN SUB-PREFECT DELAYED

Arusha, 31 March, 2009 (FH) - The trial of Dominique Ntawukuriryayo, which was to begin this week, will finally open only on 4 May, stated Spokesperson of International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Roland Amoussouga.

"The delay is due to some difficulties related to the disclosure of documents", he told Hirondelle Agency Tuesday.

Transferred from France to Tanzania in June 2008, Ntawukuriryayo, a former sub-prefect of Gisagara, southern Rwanda, has since then been detained at the special UN detention centre on the outskirts of Arusha town.

Ntawukuriryayo is accused of genocide, complicity in the genocide as well as direct and public incitement to commit the genocide. Defended by François Roux (France), Ntawukuriryayo has pleaded not guilty.
