17.12.09 - ICTR/NZABONIMANA - FORMER RWANDAN MINISTER'S TRIAL ADJOURNED TO MARCH 29

Arusha, December 17, 2009 (FH) - The trial of genocide-accused former Rwandan Youth Minister, Callixte Nzabonimana, Thursday was adjourned to March 29, 2010, reports Hirondelle Agency.

Senior Trial Attorney, Paul Ng'arua, told Hirondelle Agency that the defence would continue cross-examination of the 20th and last prosecution witness, code-named ‘'CNAC''.

According to Ng'arua, the pre-defence case meeting was planned for March 5.

The prosecutor, among other things, has alleged that the accused abused his influence and position by inciting the population in his native prefecture of Gitarama to pursue and kill ethnic Tutsis.

Nzabonimana is facing five charges of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide, extermination and murder. He has denied the charges.

The defendant was arrested in Kigoma, Western Tanzania, on February 18, 2008 and was immediately transferred to the UN Detention Facility in Arusha.
