18.12.09 - ICTR/KENYA - KABUGA'S ARREST IN THE HANDS OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL (ICTR)

Arusha, December 18, 2009 (FH) - The ICTR Spokesperson, Roland Amoussouga, on Friday accused the Kenyan authorities of refusing to cooperate in attempts to arrest Felicien Kabuga, the alleged sponsor of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

According to Chief Prosecutor Hassan Bubacar Jallow, Felicien Kabuga was the "financer of the genocide". Still a rich businessman, he is now believed to run most of his commercial activities in Kenya.

"The ultimate solution is in the hands of the Security Council. It's up to the UN to decide what to do regarding Kabuga's arrest", Roland Amoussouga told Hirondelle News Agency.

Kenyan authorities claim that Kabuga is no longer in their country. However, ICTR is requesting evidence of his departure.

Eleven suspects wanted by the ICTR are still on the run. The international tribunal is scheduled to wind up its initials trials before December 31, 2010.
