25.05.11 - ICTR/FUGITIVES - BERNARD MUNYAGISHARI ARRESTED IN DRC

Arusha, May 25, 2011 (FH) - The ICTR Prosecutor, Hassan Bubacar Jallow, announced today the arrest in the DRC of Bernard Munyagishari, one of ten fugitives still at large.

Munyagishari, 52, allegedly a leader of the Interahamwe for Gisenyi, is charged with genocide and crimes against humanity, including rape. "The accused is alleged to have recruited, trained and lead Interahamwe militiamen in mass killings and rapes of Tutsi women in Gisenyi and beyond, between April and July 1994", Hassan Jallow states.

He was arrested in an operation mounted by the DRC Armed forces, in collaboration with the office of the prosecution Tracking Unit in Kachanga, North Kivu.

Munyagishari is currently detained in Goma pending transfer to the Tribunal.

Born in 1959 in Rubavu commune in Gisenyi prefecture, Munyagishari was arrested pursuant to an international warrant issued on September 8, 2005.

Nine fugitives are still at large.
