19.06.11 - BURUNDI/JUSTICE - NEGOCIATIONS FOR SPECIAL TRIBUNAL TO RESUME IN BURUNDI

Paris, June 19, 2011 (FH) - Six years after a resolution from the UN Security Council recommending the creation of a Truth and reconciliation commission and a Special Tribunal, negotiations will resume at the end of June in Burundi.

"At the request of the government of Burundi, the Human Rights Council has agreed to provide needed expertise and funding", the Minister for Human Rights Immaculée Nahayo announced during the 17th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

"By presidential decree of June 10 2011, a committee has been created to set up transitional justice mechanisms, namely a truth and reconciliation commission and a special tribunal", she added.

The first experts are expected to arrive in Burundi on June 27, and the new mechanisms should be ready to operate in January 2012.
