15.09.11 - RWANDA/DENMARK - RWANDAN REFUGEE INDICTED IN DENMARK

Arusha, September 15, 2011 (FH) - A Danish Prosecutor has indicted a Rwandan refugee, whose identity has not been disclosed, for his alleged participation in the 1994 genocide.

The 49-year old suspect has been detained in Denmark since December 2010. According to the AFP, he is accused of having thrown a grenade on a crowd of refugees fleeing Kabuye area in 1994, killing several people.

The Prosecutor's decision came as a surprise as a local tribunal ruled in June that there was "no legal basis in Denmark to prosecute foreigners charged with genocide in another country". This ruling is still under appeal.

The defendant arrived in Denmark in 2001. He was living in Roskilde, 30 kms from Copenhagen, at the time of his arrest. He has been sentenced in absentia to life in jail in Rwanda.
