12.02.08 - ICTR/WORKSHOP - AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERTS MEET IN ARUSHA

Arusha, 12 February 2007 (FH) - About 70 African human rights experts and observers are expected to attend a three-day workshop beginning tomorrow in Arusha, Hirondelle Agency has learnt.

The event has been organized by the Regional Office for Human Rights in East Africa based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to discuss, among others, on the reporting practices to the UN human rights treaty bodies.

The workshop will also deliberate on international human rights, African human rights system and good practices.

The participants on Thursday will visit the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), trying key suspects of the 1994 genocide.

According UN estimates, about 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in the April-July slaughter.
