19.02.08 - RWANDA/UNITED STATES - GEORGE BUSH PAYS TRIBUTE TO VICTIMS OF RWANDA GENOCIDE

Kigali, 19 February 2008 (FH) - US President George W. Bush, who was Tuesday on a short visit to Rwanda, paid a tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, denouncing the inaction of international community to stop the massacres.

"It is a monumental error which all the countries of the world should recognize", declared Mr. Bush during the laying of a wreath at the memorial of the genocide in Gisozi, a hill overlooking Kigali where some
250 000 victims are buried.

"We must recognize this wrong, and that we should convene that what occurred in Rwanda does not happen elsewhere in the world ever again", underlined the American President, pleading for unity and the reconciliation of Rwandans.

According to the UN, more than 800 000 victims, primarily Tutsis, were killed during the April-July massacres by Hutu extremists then in power.
