28.03.08 - RWANDA/GENOCIDE - RWANDAN MAYOR FIRED FOR SPREADING ‘GENOCIDE IDEOLOGY'

Kigali, 28 March 2008 (FH) - The District Council of Gakenke, Northern Rwanda, Wednesday unanimously sacked its Mayor Epaphrodite Mugemangango, accused of spreading genocide ideology among his constituents.

According to a report of the district council, Mugemangango was behind incidents involving genocide ideology in the sectors of Janja, Nemba and Muzo, reported Thursday Rwanda's official newspaper, The New Times. He is also alleged not to have acted against teachers preaching that a double genocide was perpetrated in Rwanda, added the newspaper.

According to UN estimates, about 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in the April-July 1994 genocide.

Mugemangango was elected to his position in March 2006. The district will be temporarily managed by its Executive Secretary, Richard Mberabagabo, pending new elections.

The Ministry of Education fired about fifty principals and teachers in January, this year, accused of conveying the obnoxious genocide ideology.
