26.05.08 - RWANDA/GACACA - MAN GETS 30 YEARS JAIL FOR HIS ROLE IN 1994 GENOCIDE

Kigali, 26 May 2008 (FH) - The Gacaca Court of Nyamirambo , Nyarugenge district, in Kigali, has sentenced a 48-year-old Augustin Mwitirehe, a resident of the sector, to 30 years in prison for being implicated in the 1994 genocide, reports Hirondelle Agency.

Accused of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity, Mwitirehe was found guilty of criminal conspiracy; complicity and responsibility in the murder of several people and in several missions in Nyamirambo, in the current cell of Cyivugiza; and inhuman treatment on 30 people, including pregnant women, before killing them, stated the judges ruling of the semi-traditional court.

Before ten damning testimonies, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

In addition to his automatic exclusion from Work of General Interest (WGI), a community work, which was a result of his not guilty plea, the convict will have to pay all the looted goods in question in a later trial.
