12.11.08 - ICTR/KAREMERA - WITNESS CLAIMS THERE WAS NO TRAINING OF MILITIAMEN IN BWAKIRA REGION

Arusha, 12 November 2008 (FH) - A witness called for the defence of a leader of the former Rwandan presidential party categorically denied Wednesday that there was any training of Interahamwe militiamen in his region of Bwakira, in the prefecture of Kibuye ,western Rwanda.

RTM, thus indicated to preserve his identity, defended the former vice-president of the National Republican Movement for Democracy and Development (MRND), Edouard Karemera, on trial with two other former leaders of this party that was dissolved after the 1994 genocide.

"There never was any training of Interahamwe in Bwakira", stated the witness. The three defendants in this case are prosecuted for crimes committed by the Interahamwe, the youth wing of their political movement.

"The MRND did not have a word to say in Bwakira since 1991", stated RTM, by explaining the presidential party could not mobilize youth in that region.

According to a witness for the prosecution, Matwi, training of the Interahamwe militiamen would have taken place in Bwakira in 1993-1994.

RTM, who was 18 years old in 1994, indicated that Matwi had straightforwardly lied.

The lawsuit has proceeded in the absence of the former president of the MRND, patient for several weeks. The video recordings of the audiences, including those of the doors - closed, are however regularly sent to him to the hospital, on decision of the room.

The third marked one is the former General Secretary of MRND, Joseph Nzirorera.

Accused of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity, these national ex-leaders of the MRND protest their innocence.
