04.12.08 - ICTR/MILITARY II - MILITARY II TRIAL ADJOURNED TO MID FEBRUARY NEXT YEAR

Arusha 04 December, 2008 (FH) - Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) Thursday adjourned joint trial of four former Rwandan military officers known as "Military II" to February 16, 2009 after the last accused, Captain Innocent Sagahutu, completed his own defence on Wednesday.

On resumption, the Chamber would hear four recalled prosecution witnesses and five additional defence witnesses for four consecutive days running from 16 to 19, February.

The Chamber also ordered the parties to submit their closing briefs by 13 March, 2009 whereas oral arguments would be heard from June 24 to 26, 2009.

The parties are scheduled for site visit to Rwanda between April 6 and 9, 2009. The session started September 8, 2008.

Others accused in the trial are: Captain Sagahutu's boss, Major Francois-Xavier Nzuwonemeye; and two former Chiefs of Staff of Army-- General Augustin Bizimungu and of Gendarmerie National, Augustin Ndindiliyimana.

The accused, whose joint case which started September 20, 2004, have pleaded not guilty to genocide and crimes against humanity.
