17.12.08 - RWANDA/FRANCE - CPCR URGES FRENCH COURTS TO TRY 1994 GENOCIDE SUSPECTS

Arusha, 17 December 2008 (FH) - An umbrella organization of Civil Parties for Rwanda (CPCR) has requested that French courts, which have refused to extradite to Rwanda 1994 genocide suspects, to instead try them in France.

This organisation, which also involves associations of genocide survivors, denounced in an official statement copied to the Hirondelle Agency, the recent rejection of Rwandan extradition requests, including those concerning Isaac Kamali, Claver Kamana and Pascal Simbikangwa.

"Since French courts consider that the people who would have taken part in genocide cannot be transferred to Kigali on grounds that Rwandan courts were not competent, then we are posed to ask about the fate which will be reserved for these alleged genocidaires", stated CPCR.

The CPCR plans, if nothing was done, to file complaints "so that justice is rendered to the victims and to the survivors of the genocide".
