20.02.09 - ICTR/BUTARE - FOUR PROSECUTION WITNESSES RECALLED FOR DEFENCE CROSS-EXAMINATION MONDAY

Arusha, 20 February,  2009 (FH)- The largest trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Butare, will Monday see four recalled prosecution witnesses being cross-examined by defence for maximum of two weeks, reports Hirondelle Agency.

The witnesses have been recalled following request from the defence, an application which was granted by the Chamber.

The defendants jointly accused are former Mayor of Muganza Elie Ndayambaje; former Minister of Family and Women Affairs, Pauline Nyiramasuhuko and her son Arsene Shalom Ntahobali; former Governors Sylvain Nsabimana and Alphonse Nteziryayo; and Ex-mayor of Ngoma Commune, Joseph Kanyabashi.

All have pleaded not guilty to genocide and crimes against humanity.

The case which commenced in June 2001, has consumed a total of 714 trial days so far.
